What’s the secret behind your smile?

From Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake:

She wishes the curtains were open, so that she could talk to the American women. Perhaps one of them has given birth before, can tell her what to expect. But she has gathered that Americans, in spite of their public declarations of affection, in spite of their miniskirts and bikinis, in spite of their hand-holding on the street and lying on top of each other on the Cambridge Common, prefer their privacy.

I cannot guess what we’ll discover.

Alex

Alex and I went to MoMA yesterday. We didn’t know it, but tickets were free. We spent two hours wandering around, trying to figure out why people look so hard to find meanings in each piece.

Where’s he gone now, I can’t see.

Spider

All I’ve got in my head right now are the lyrics to “Boris the Spider” by The Who.

I guess that’s what happens when you spend your time taking photos of the arachnid instead of killing it: it disappears once you leave with your camera.

I cannot sleep in my bed tonight. Not after I found this spider under my slipper — which was under my comforter.

Once I finish crying, I’m going to go get my alarm clock and go to sleep on my couch.
